We arrived at dusk through one of the nine gates leading into Plaza Mayor, located in the center of Madrid. Eddie, Karen, Chef, and I had just stepped into this historic public space that once served as the hub of Old Madrid. The sky was a gentle purple, and the cafes’ lanterns cast a warm glow. A light, refreshing breeze stirred the air as we took in the surroundings.
Hawkers were peddling spinning lights that flew high into the sky. A juggler spinning sticks of fire awed the crowd.
Reluctant to leave the enchantment of the plaza, but hungry, we scanned the outdoor menus for a dinner selection. We had our choice of restaurants since it was just 8pm, early for the Madrid crowd, They usually dine at 10 or even 11pm.
Enticed by the tempting menu, I eagerly embarked on new culinary experiences. For the appetizer, I selected Manzanilla olives accompanied by fresh Spanish artisan bread. Then, abandoning my comfort zone completly, I ordered oxtail stew for the main course. To my surprise and delight, it was wonderfully mild, with a lightly thickened brown sauce. Roasted red potatoes and julienned mixed vegetables accompanied the dish. Chef and Karen’s selection of the perfect red wine made the meal complete.
All of us agreed that we’ll remember that lovely evening forever.
The evening was not over after dinner. We continued to stroll as along the streets leading from Plaza Mayor in the general direction of our hotel and found ourselves at Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate). There we had our pictures made at La Oso y el Madroño, Statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree. We were among a few tourists getting their pictures at the famous monument.
There were countless people, locals and tourists enjoying the outdoors that night. We strolled as long as we could in the general direction of our hotel before finally giving in and hailing a taxi. We had almost made it to Cibeles Fountain, and could see it only a few blocks away.
